Meet Sydney Peña, Axis’s newest interior designer. Sydney graduated from Purdue University in May, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design and minors in construction management and building information modeling. Before joining Axis, Sydney served as the president of Purdue’s IIDA/ASID chapter and received the Student of the Year award from the International Interior Design Association. We’re honored to have Sydney join our team.

Sydney Pena
Sydney Peña is a 2019 graduate of Purdue University and received the Student of the Year award from the International Interior Design Association. She joined Axis earlier this year.

Before Axis, Sydney interned at major companies like Holder Construction, Marc-Michaels Interior Design, and Tesla. (She likes to say she’s worked in the presence of Elon Musk.) Sydney is a LEED Green Associate, too, and received the 2017 IIDA Winners Circle Award, Indiana Chapter. She also participated the 2018 Student Design Charette at NeoCon and was a winner in the 2019 IIDA Indiana IDEA Awards. With so many accolades, it’s no surprise Sydney has long held a passion for design.

“When I was young, I would unknowingly rearrange the floor plan of my own room, dream up different ways I could paint the walls, and fall in love with accessories that could help make my living space my own,” she says. “Although I know now that a designer’s job description far exceeds my elementary knowledge at the time, I feel like I was born to create.”

Sydney describes her style as an innovative and sustainable twist on natural elements. While she particularly enjoys working on corporate, retail, and housing projects, she appreciates the opportunity to create unique, timeless looks for every client. “What’s most rewarding about being a designer is that satisfying ‘ahh’ moment after you see your vision come to life,” Sydney says.

As a naturally curious individual, Sydney isn’t afraid to ask questions or experience new places. Traveling inspires her, as does exploring nature. However, it’s the everyday things that move her the most. “God inspires me,” Sydney says. “It’s the beauty in the little things right before our eyes that amazes me.” Her faith contributes to her desire to lead a healthy lifestyle in mind, body, and soul. In addition to volunteering at her church, Sydney also practices yoga and maintains a journal. “I like to spend hours at a coffee shop reading or journaling with my husband,” Sydney says. “It’s on my bucket list to one day write a book.”
